On December 1, 1959, twelve nations signed the Antarctic Treaty to ensure the freedom of scientific research in Antarctica and the peaceful use of the continent. Antarctica Day is celebrated on December 1 each year to celebrate the signing of this treaty.
When reading about how to celebrate Antarctica Day, the first recommendation was “tell your Antarctic story. Mine, at the time of this composition’s creation, is passionate ambition. For years, I have desired to visit the frozen continent for first-hand experience. In the meantime, my research through reading and watching videos about Antarctica has inspired this and two other compositions celebrating the region. By composing this work, I fulfilled one challenge on the Antarctic Ambassadorship Challenge: “Create a piece of art about Antarctica and share it.”I became an Antarctic Ambassador on 11 Jan 2025 and plan to remain a lifelong passionate member.
Musically, the climax portion takes place at the Golden Mean if the performers take proper heed to observe the meno mosso at m. 45 (rehearsal letter E) and the molto rit. at the end. Generally in music, timing is difficult to strike the perfect moment of golden ratio since the climax is usually not a precisely calculated moment, but a span of time. At any rate, great effort was made to incorporate the mathematical aesthetic into this piece of music. Duration: 3:00.
The contemplative beginning of this work stirs emotions of anyone who has been to Antarctica. The melodic and harmonic content are calculated to arouse profound feelings of being part of something enormous. It is my hope that it will premiere in Antarctica on 1 Dec 2025: Antarctica Day.
