Op. 173: Chamorro: The People of the Mariana Islands, for brass quintet was started on 17 Mar 2024 on my way home from a week-long music festival in Guam: the annual Tumon Bay Music Festival. I had participated in that festival as a performer and clinician; as a trumpeter and a composer. Three Air Force Bandsmen were present at the festival, augmented by two islanders on trumpet and trombone for a combined brass quintet. That makeshift quintet premiered three of my “Five Miniatures for the Aspiring Brass Quintet.” The Air Force personnel also performed as a trio, premiering my three-movement brass trio composition titled “Three Moods.” This present composition, “Chamorro,” was completed on 18 Dec 2024, a week after my second inspiring trip to Guam, which also included Saipan and Tinian. The full Air Force brass quintet, Pacific Brass, toured throughout the larger Mariana Islands in support of Operation Christmas Drop. This work completes a heartfelt gift to all those exuberant Chamorro islanders who welcomed us so enthusiastically and sincerely, and who demonstrated the purest Christmas cheer I have experienced in many years.
