Feline Antics, Op. 160, for brass quintet was completed on 14 Jun 2024. For years, my children and I have enjoyed compilations of cats doing funny things. While shopping at a crafts store in Bangladesh, of all places, I captured the most extraordinary photo of two cats engaging in a stoic territorial faceoff. A colleague had his video feature running, hoping for a dramatic scuffle with catty screams and flying fur. That did not happen, fortunately. I was most grateful to have captured the still-life drama with such exquisite lighting that inspired the cover of this already titled composition. Two other colleagues that were also with me in Bangladesh have two cats, Meru and Mira, which would eventually become the stars of the short video for this fun-filled feline music. The two trumpet parts call for piccolos in B-flat, fitting for the characteristic shrillness that cats at times exude. Duration: 2:10.
