Cricket King (Trumpet Trio), duration, approximately two minutes.

“The Cricket King” was composed in the spring of 2009. The students for whom the piece was written were asked to title the composition, and came up with an evocative, noble character. This “Cricket King” made his way into elaborate ongoing bedtime stories involving small creatures named Snuzzles, who have long white fluffy fur and short purple trunk-like snouts; their predators are called the Weestabu. Other creative details include Snuzzles’ principal food, Stroggage (a fun code word for spinach that continues to get little children to consume spinach in shake form), and feline-type leaf-eaters called Folgatos that the Cricket Critters tamed and employed as beasts of burden and protectors. Several other musical illustrations to this cute story are in duet form, available in the wonderful duet collection titled “Fifteen-Course Dinner for Two,” available through Gilded Music Press.
The trio is challenging for amateurs and fun for more experienced musicians. It can serve as a regal celebratory fanfare for any occasion, or to begin a student recital. In the educational setting it is a fantastic piece to read in group lessons.
